Introduction to ATRANS Asian Transportation Research Society or ATRANS in short is a total non-profitable research institution which was initiated on 4 May 2007 and was licensed on 1st April 2008. ATRANS was established for encouragement of academics / researchers on conducting empirical and pragmatic research approaches regardless of transportation-related problems, traffic safety, energy and environment in multidisciplinary manner. ATRANS comprehends and perceives the importance of research activities and hence established in response to a lack of transportation research institutes in Asia. ATRANS aims at providing its members funding opportunity towards conducting the aforementioned research areas. Why ATRANS? α Principle and Rationale Transportation is an essential and integral part of our mobile society. It bridges the gap between social exclusion and mobility which entails an equal accessibility and mutual interaction to all mankind. Transportation development has significant influenced upon not only daily living and lifestyle but also social culture, human behavior and environment. α Statement of Problem It is undeniable that economy and quality of life depend upon a transportation system that functions well. In Asia, over decades, there has been heavily an emphasis on building physical transportation infrastructures to stimulate economic growth leading to unsustainable levels of traffic and resource use. Similarly, population growth associated with rampant motorization has brought about auto dependency and hence generating traffic congestion and accidents resulting in severe injury and death as well as environmental impacts and economic losses. These create a great challenge to agencies concerned to tackle the problems with new and sustainable innovative solutions.
